About Varden Conservation Area

Located in Wayne County, northeastern Pennsylvania, Varden Conservation Area encompasses over 600 acres of mixed forests, wetlands, and streams. The area was established to protect the region’s unique ecosystems and provide residents and visitors with opportunities for passive recreation and wildlife observation. The landscape features rolling hills, dense hardwood forests dominated by oak, maple, and birch, as well as wet habitats that support amphibians, songbirds, and migratory waterfowl. Historically, the land was used for timber and small-scale farming before conservation efforts secured its protection. Varden Conservation Area’s network of multi-use trails winds through woodlands and along creeks, providing excellent hiking, birdwatching, and cross-country skiing opportunities. Anglers can fish in the area’s clean waters, which support native trout populations. The conservation area is also a quiet destination for nature photography and environmental education. Its proximity to the Delaware River and nearby towns such as Honesdale makes it accessible yet remote enough to enjoy the peace of the outdoors. The protected status supports ongoing habitat restoration, invasive species management, and conservation programs aimed at preserving biodiversity and watershed quality. Visitors value Varden Conservation Area for its natural beauty, varied terrain, and abundance of wildlife throughout all seasons.
